History of some places

Introduction: Some information is given in this chapter reproduced from the series of articles published in ‘Janmabhoomi’ on historical Nadiad.

Where does Desai Vago get its name?

There used to be housed of Shankardas Desai, Bapuji Desai, and Vallabhbhai Desai near where stands the house of Gokulbhai Barister today. The area around ‘Desais’ is Desai Vago. In old documents can be seen names like Narayan Patel’s Mahollo and Patelwad. This name is not seen in our documents. Decendents of Narayandas patel started writing ‘Desai’ surname after Vallabhdas got ‘desai giri’

Maddabari old crematorium

In the old times the crematorium at maddabari was used. The development of the town during the Muslim rule developed from Marida Bhagol to panch hatdi area. During the times of Amdavadi sultans and Mogul times, three fourth of Nadiad was owned by Gamtal sheikh and Lotia Vohras. ‘Payaga’ of Kadi’s Mahadevrao was located where today’s ‘Malharparu’ is.

Temple of Narayandev

Mahadevrao laid foundation of this temple in samvat 1856 but as he had to run away in 1859, Ratanshetani of Haribhakto family of Baroda completed this temple contruction. The ‘divankhanu’ where the masons and craftsmen stayed is today a dilapidated place. The digging of land to make bricks for this temple eventually turned into a lake that is called ‘Ratan Lake’ today.

Daval kai etc.

There is a mosque at the Salun boarder. Near here in a ‘khadki’ was haveli of ‘tiv dawal’ three hundered years ago. These dawals were Amirs during the Muslim rule with influence. Their haveli had a fountain, a garden etc. They owned several wells and farms, which even today are known as ‘davalia khetaro’ and daval well. By the Maratha times, these dawals came to weak times and their properties had to be sold piece by piece. Today (in 1925) a descendent of these dawal is a worker in the Municipality (his name is Fazlkhan).

Six powers of Nadiad

It is said that during the reign of Ramalhad, Nadiad was ruled by six patis. Around Salun Boarder and mosque was the ‘jagir’ (property) of Jerambhai Bechardas, was the area of Sidibaxi. Ramaldhad’s ‘pati’ was located in Alhadvaga. Mogul pati dominated at mogulkot area. Test of the town were divided among the lotia voras and the sheikhs. (We are doubtful that the mogulpati existed in Nadiad during the reign of Mohmmed Begda)

Vachewad or Vachna vadi

What is known as Vachewadi today, used to be known as Vachnavadi once. Behind where today is the area of factories of woodwork, there used to be a small lake: that lake was called ‘Vachnalake’

From Janmabhoomi of 1-10-1925

Govardhanram Tripathi and Narhariram have written a book titled ‘Madhavram Smarika’ which they dedicated to their caste. This book contains lineages of Vadnagar Brahmins of Nadiad. Vadnagars live in Nadiad mostly at nagarwada and some at kansarwada. Nagarwada starts at kaji chakala, near Mahalaxmi temple and the main ‘poles’ of Nagars are : Jani varajbhaivali, Vaniavali, piplawadi.

Among the ‘khadakis’ are: Dharampurvali, Kriparam Ambadutt vadi, Zaverilal Umiyashankervali etc. in addition, small and large kahdakis all the way to Pij boarder though the population of Nagars in recent times is almost zero in those areas. Old men spent their free time sitting on the bench talking and gossiping. Now they spend time thus at Hatkeshwar temple. Shree Umedkumari temple made at the cost of Rs. 50000.

Also has Dahilaxmi library; the work on which shall occupy the Nagars. Apart from the library, Nagars have always donated money for public causes.

Bhudarji Pandya’s Vaidanth Mahadev; Kirpadutt Pandyas Kubereshwar Mahadev, Keshavji’s Mahadev at Pij boarder, Prabhushanker Mahadev, Gokulji Kashinath Pandya’s hatkeshwar Mahadev, Mahadev built on the land gifter by our father at Khodiyar mata, Bhagvatram pandya’s Shankheswar mahadev, Zaverilal Umiashankar Yagnik’s father Sarumukhram’s Mahadev, renovated Mahadev at Dumral boarder called kedareshwar Mahadev, Jani Raghvji Rudraji’s Gopinath Mahadev at kumbhnath, kamnath mahadev at 2 miles from the station, our father spent Rs. 20000.

on renovation of the ‘vav’ at Amdavadi bhagol and a small temple of Hanuman at this place, our father also had gifted Rs. 1000. to the English school at Mogulkot, reparation of the Ratan lake done by Vakhatram Pandya some twenty years ago, an amount given by the Mumbai Nagars for lunch after thread ceremony, the library extension building built by Dolatram Pandya in memory of his father, Jametram Sanskrit patshala which was entirely made from a donation of Rs 20000., the free lunch home run in memory of Valabh Bhagwan.
